Brainy Bet in the Skies

A brunette and a scientist find themselves seated next to each other on a cross-country flight from San Francisco to New York.

The scientist suggests a game to pass the time, saying, “How about we play a fun game?”

The brunette, exhausted and just wanting to relax, politely declines and turns towards the window for some shut-eye.

Undeterred, the scientist persists, “Come on, it’s easy and entertaining. I’ll ask you a question, and if you don’t know the answer, you pay me $5.00, and vice versa.”

Again, she declines and attempts to catch some much-needed rest.

Growing impatient, the scientist proposes a more enticing offer, “Alright, if you don’t know the answer, you pay me $5.00, but if I don’t know, I’ll pay you $500.00.”

Intrigued, the brunette, thinking this might be an interesting way to make the time pass, agrees to the game.

The scientist poses the first question, “What’s the speed of light?”

The brunette doesn’t utter a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a $5.00 bill, and hands it to the scientist.

“Fair enough,” he says, “your turn.”

She then asks the scientist, “What has a heart that doesn’t beat?”

Puzzled, the scientist browses through his scientific references, checks his digital devices, and even sends messages to colleagues – all to no avail.

After an hour of futile efforts, he wakes the brunette and hands her $500.00.

With a gracious smile, she says, “Thank you,” and turns back to get some more sleep.

Frustrated, the scientist, now wide awake, nudges the brunette and asks, “Well, what’s the answer?”

Without a word, she reaches into her purse, hands the scientist $5.00, and goes back to sleep.
